In the past five years, our innovative US/UK Exchange programme has developed relationships with 20 superb writers on both sides of the Atlantic. The programme has been instrumental in moving these writers towards production both in the writer's home country and in the foreign territory, leading to countless other readings and development opportunities. Many of our playwrights have gone on to win Oliviers, Outer Critics Awards, Obies and have been subsequently commissioned for West End musicals, Broadway productions and major and independent motion pictures.

In 2006, we relaunched the programme to take into account the formation of the New Voices Club - The Old Vic's professional development programme for young and emerging talent. This resulted in a group of young practitioners travelling to New York in 2007 to meet with representatives of the city's best new writing theatres and to work with a company of American practitioners to showcase two new works at Theatre Row. Joel Horwood's piece Stoopud F*cken Animals subsequently premiered at the Traverse, Edinburgh.

This year, we formed a partnership with the Public Theater in New York to source an American writer and director to travel to London to develop new work with New Voices Club practitioners at The Old Vic. New Voices writer, Jon Cooper is working with American director Colette Robert to develop his piece on the devastating effects of Alzheimer's - For Once I Was In Names and Numbers; and American writer David Myers is working with New Voices director Rachel Briscoe to develop his searing examination of roots and identity, 1800 Acres.
