Pygmalion will provide the inspiration for the London's Language schools challenge to create a number of contemporary monologues based on themes taken from the production such as Social Roles, Manners, Class Distinction and Personal Identity. A selection of the resulting monologues will be filmed by a professional cast and crew from The Old Vic.
About the Project
London has always been a city of many cultures and faiths, with a population from all over the world. It has always been an important centre for the settlement of immigrants and refugees. Today over 200 languages are spoken in London, the heart of the UK's multicultural society. With the classroom becoming ever more diverse how is this influencing the way young people communicate with one another?
THE PROCESS
1. Teachers' Day
Behind the scenes tour, script study and dissemination of lesson plan to be taught to your students in the traditional classroom setting. Day will end with free tickets to see
Pygmalion at The Old Vic.
2. School Visit to see Pygmalion
You will be given thirty-three (33) tickets free of charge for your students to see a matinee of
Pygmalion. Pre-classroom preparation using In-Set Day material will ensure students have a clear idea of the story, themes and characters.
3. Old Vic In-School Workshop
A team from The Old Vic will visit your school for a morning or afternoon session. Improvisation techniques, text study and writing exercises will tease out ideas and issues in more detail ultimately culminating in a class monologue that uses contemporary language to contextualise the plays themes for today's society.
4. Selection Process
Each of the monologues created will be submitted to a panel of literary experts who will select five of the most engaging to be filmed by a professional cast and crew. Those schools selected will be involved in the casting of a suitable director and actors and will also help decide on the location and feel of the piece if they so wish.
5. Education Pack
The double award winning education team at The Old Vic will create a LondonŐs Language Education Pack that will include lesson plans and all monologues in both written and filmed format crediting your school's involvement.
As you can see LondonŐs Language provides a great opportunity for students to engage with industry professionals as well as seeing a hugely respected production on The Old Vic stage all completely free of charge.

When we launched in February, it became apparent from the overwhelming response that we'd hit upon a significant theme. Soon, 300 pupils were on board and the process of devising and creative learning began. The Old Vic team - workshop leaders, film-makers, a playwright and director - worked in ten schools over five weeks, tackling a different theme of aspiration each week, for example 'self-esteem' and 'dream jobs'.

'The dreams were immense... there are no boundaries against our dreams, no one can stop us from having them'
