'A significant theatrical event.' Evening Standard [on The Bridge Project 2009].
Last spring, The Bridge Project launched its inaugural season with an outstanding ensemble of American and British actors. The critically-acclaimed company, led by Olivier and Academy Award®- winning director Sam Mendes, embarked on a world tour. Playing to sell-out audiences in cities across the globe, including New York, Singapore, Madrid, Auckland, Recklinghausen, Epidaurus and here at The Old Vic.
Year two of The Bridge Project promises another stellar transatlantic lineup and the intriguing pairing of two celebrated classics, Shakespeare's As You Like It and The Tempest.
The Bridge Project opens with the pastoral comedy As You Like It – a story full of wit and mischief, of power hungry siblings, girls playing boys, exiled love and foolery, which pairs hearty laughter with magical moments.
The Tempest, makes up the second part of the double-bill – an enchanting tale of shipwrecks and sorcery, of loves lost and found, this romantic comedy of freedom, friendship, repentance and forgiveness is widely considered to be Shakespeare's last play.
Sam Mendes was founder and Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse for a decade and has directed theatre at the RSC, National Theatre, plus in the West End and on Broadway. His film credits include American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road and the recent Away We Go.
