Following his success on the silver screen in 1953 epic, The Robe, Richard Burton turned down the offer of a seven-year, seven-picture $1 million contract to play Hamlet at The Old Vic for £150 per week in the 1953-1954 season alongside Claire Bloom as Ophelia.
