Meet The Old Vic 12 – Sara Joyce
On 5 December 2017 we announced The Old Vic 12 class of 2018 to the world. Consisting of writers, directors, designers, producers, composers and even a puppet maker, the group will spend the next year collaborating to create new work throughout our bicentenary year and beyond.
Each week we’ll be getting to know a different member of this talented company through 12 questions – for week eleven we caught up with director Sara Joyce.
1. WHAT’S YOUR NAME?
2. WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a director.
3. WHO INSPIRES YOU?
I’m inspired by people who are super talented, who do stuff like music and play instruments and sing and dance and act and write and they have the willingness and capacity to share that, and share their vulnerability. It’s disgusting. And by my family and my friends and the people I work with every day.
4. WHAT CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT?
Coffee. I love coffee. Just like really cheap, basic coffee. And gin.
5. LAST SHOW YOU SAW?
Last show I saw was The Brother’s Size at The Young Vic and it was so beautiful. It was just gorgeous, I loved it.
6. THEATRE SNACKS – YAY OR NAY?
No. No, don’t… no. Eat before you go, or eat after, nobody wants this rustle rustle, crunch crunch, munch munch. No.
7. YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE OF TRIVIA?
In the early 1900s Kellogg’s Cornflakes brought out an ad campaign where they said that if women wanted to get a free box of Kellogg’s Cornflakes they would just have to wink at their grocer.
8. ONE TRICK OF THE TRADE YOU’VE DISCOVERED
Always surround yourself with people who are far more talented than you are. Just better people and just brilliant. And be nice to them. Talk to people the way you want to be spoken to. You don’t need to be Nasty McNastyButtons to do what you want to do.
9. NIGHT OWL OR EARLY BIRD?
I’m an owl. I’m an owl who wants to be a bird.
10. YOUR LIFE STORY IN ONE SHORT SENTENCE
Wanted to be a princess. Grew up in Ireland. Logically saw that the monarchy was in Britain. Came here and I’m now a director.
11. IN ONE YEAR YOU WILL HAVE…
Don’t ask that! Probably be even deeper in some hole of self-doubt and insecurity going, ‘why didn’t I do medicine?’.
