SYLVIA at The Old Vic
At The Old Vic we have a passion and commitment for developing new musical theatre projects. You will see them regularly pop up in our programming and since 2015 we have presented several contrasting examples — Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, Groundhog Day, Cover My Tracks, Girl from the North Country — and now SYLVIA, the funk, soul, hip hop, suffragette musical.
SYLVIA was originally commissioned by The Old Vic a year ago as a dance theatre piece about the life of Sylvia Pankhurst. Since that point it has radically evolved into what promises to be a genuinely thrilling full-blown musical.
However, preview performances are crucial in the development of a show, during which time a great deal of cutting, rewriting and shaping usually takes place and due to the unexpected illness of a key member of the cast, these revisions have simply not been possible – our time has been spent entirely on working to rehearse in the understudies. As a result the performance you are watching is considerably longer and in a more raw state than the creative team and The Old Vic would ever have planned.
As such, this is the show in its first incarnation. SYLVIA is starting its life at The Old Vic and what we are sharing with you today is a work in progress.
There is much work and revision to be done but we very much hope that this thrilling production will go on to have a future life that we believe it deserves.
Thank you for joining us on this very special journey.
