Task
Pick a scene from your favourite play that you would like to have a go at lighting. Read through the scene you have selected and note down what you want your audience to feel and how you plan to achieve that using:
- Different lighting positions.
- Different colours.
- The four different types of lights we explored at the start of the workshop.
Task
Now that you have your lighting synopsis, it’s time to test your ideas.
If you have a friend or family member to help, ask them to perform the scene while you light them from different angles. If you don’t have anyone to help you, try using objects in place of people. You can also try:
- Using multiple light sources.
- Creating your own lighting gels using sweet wrappers.
- Creating your own gobos by cutting patterns into a piece of cardboard.
Remember, you don’t have to stick to the ideas in your lighting synopsis. If you aren’t happy with an effect or it doesn’t work, you can change your idea.
Once you’re happy with how the lighting looks, take some photos of your work so you can remember what you created.
Thank you for taking part in our Introduction to Lighting Design workshop. We hope you found it useful and that you had fun experimenting with lighting. We’d love to know how you got on.
