Task

As an actor, it is important to consider the technical aspects of your performance. Thinking about your voice as a tool, spend at least five minutes playing with the following:

  • Tone: Is your character sincere, detached or joyful. At what points does their tone change?
  • Pitch: What type of voice does your character have? Is it high, low or regular? How does emotion change this?
  • Volume: Is your character softly spoken or do they have a booming voice? When are they loud or quiet? Do they deliberately whisper or shout?
  • Pace: How slowly or quickly does your character speak? Is their speech pattern rhythmic or stilted? Does emotion cause them to speed up or slow down?
  • Interjections: Are there moments when your character pauses? Do they laugh or sob? If they laugh, when and how do they laugh?

Push yourself to try out new ideas, even if you are unsure if they will work or not. You might make an interesting discovery about the way your character speaks.
