Task
Below, you will find a props list, reference images and a brief for an imaginary production. You need to research the items below online and see if you can source them all within the timescale and allotted budget.
The Brief
Your budget is £600 and your technical rehearsal will take place three weeks from today. All items must arrive before the tech rehearsal begins. The play is set in a 1960’s kitchen in the UK. During the scene, a mother is making a cup of tea in the kitchen and a child is sat playing with dolls.
Props to Source
- 1 x Kettle
- 4 x Mugs
- 8 x Plates
- 1 x Tea towel
- 1 x Kitchen table with at least 4 chairs
- 1 x Green Telephone
- 2 x Barbie dolls (with period appropriate clothes and accessories)
- Teabags (period labelling), plus items to make a cup of tea
- Biscuits (period labelling)
To get you started, take a look at the British Heart Foundation online furniture shop, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree and Freecycle. You can use the images below to give you an idea of the aesthetic the designer is looking to create.

Top tip: not all items need to be bought. You might be able to make them yourself. For example, combining a vintage bottle with a handmade label to create a milk bottle. Think outside the box. You can find out more about sourcing sustainable theatre props and materials on the Theatre Green Book website.
Task
One of the cast members is lactose intolerant. What adjustments would you make to the food items used in the scene to make sure they were safe for them to use?
