‘I made my choice. I took my road and I did what was right for me. I paid the consequences. Now that’s over and done.’
(Booster in Jitney by August Wilson)
Four powerful documentary short films created by Kestrel Theatre Company and award-winning filmmaker Dorothy Allen-Pickard will be shared in this unique pre-show Voices Off screening that explores the personal experiences of four men after leaving prison.
A talk inspired by one of the central characters of August Wilson’s Jitney (on stage 09 Jun–09 Jul), Eleanor Henderson (Artistic Director at Kestrel) and Tinuke Craig (Jitney director and current Old Vic Baylis Director) will chair an on-stage Q&A with the Kestrel associates featured in the films, Marc, Ricardo, Nathaniel and Brian, to discuss the themes of the show as well as the impact of arts in the criminal justice system.
Kestrel employs professionals to work creatively within the criminal justice system, facilitating original pieces of work, mostly theatre and film. By empowering offenders to express themselves in a non-judgmental, collaborative and enabling environment, Kestrel help them develop greater self-confidence, mutual respect, and resilience. And by realising their creative potential, help them produce work of the highest standard.
